Years Teaching: 15 years working with children and adolescents with special needs.

Area of Specialty: Autism spectrum disorders, ADHD and ABA

Why did you get into teaching? I initially became interested in child psychology because I was interested in understanding behavior and I enjoyed interacting with children. Job opportunities led me into working with children with developmental disabilities where I became interested in the specific challenges of this population.

Why did you choose special education? Working in schools gives me the opportunity to have the greatest impact on children – it is where they spend most of their time.

What keeps you motivated? Seeing the small steps students take in learning new skills and improving behavior, also hearing parents describe how they feel more effective at meeting their child’s needs.

Angela Zamora-Castillo

Years Teaching: 2 years, 7 in admin

Area of Specialty: I have worked with those who have autism and emotional disabilities.

Why did you get into teaching? Having a mother who is deaf and a brother with Autism, I grew up learning a great deal about patience and compassion.

Why did you choose special education? I enjoy a work environment that changes on a day-to-day basis to keep me motivated and challenged.

What keeps you motivated? Seeing the gains/growth that these students make, keeps me smiling and motivated to want to ensure I am a part of providing a successful environment.
