Sharron’s son Cody was destructive, argumentative, and frequently suspended from school. It was hard to separate his emotional challenges from his academics struggles, and, at 13, he still wasn’t reading. Until, that is, his public school recommended Spectrum. “He’s a different child today,” says Sharron, “both at school and at home. He’s calmer, he’s more secure, and he’s reading!”
Spectrum began by addressing the behavioral issues that hindered Cody’s ability to learn. “Everything with him was a struggle,” explains Sharron. “Just getting Cody to walk down the hall to his next class was a fight.” Through positive behavior management strategies, Cody learned to say what he needed, rather than act out, he learned alternative behaviors. “Today he’s so much more cooperative,” says Sharron.
“Spectrum understands Cody,” adds Sharron. “They know that transitions are hard for him, so they take change slowly and make it predictable. Everyone’s in touch with each other.” That kind of consistency, she adds, is critical. “He tends to go from person to person until he hears what he wants, but at Spectrum, everyone’s on the same page—always.”
With his behavioral hurdles overcome, Cody was able to focus on learning. And despite years of no progress, he’s now reading and has advanced several grade levels. “Spectrum has done a wonderful job. They’ve brought things under control for Cody,” says his mom, “I can’t say enough about how I feel about that.”
